CBT + MI

I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) together which, when done correctly, competently, fluidly and flexibly, is the most empirically-supported treatment for nearly all “disorders.”  This combination offers space to create lasting change.

My application of CBT is personalized, strategic, and unique.

Developing cognitive flexibility and better myelination of healthier neural networks is my focus.  I have found change happens faster with laughter—in laughter, we experience life more accurately and feel safer to consider alternative behaviors and pathways.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

CBT focuses on challenging and changing unhelpful cognitive distortions, core beliefs, and behaviors; improving emotion regulation; and developing personal coping strategies that assist in solving current problems.

I have found that manuals and “self-help” books often prolong suffering and distract from effective change.  Until we understand why we do what we do and resolve the functions of emotional distress, learn healthier coping mechanisms, and change our behaviors, a good, healthy brain will out-maneuver manuals. The brain becomes “dis-eased” to get our attention to motivate us to change something that needs to be changed.

Your brain isn’t messing with you just to mess with you; it’s trying to be helpful.

Motivational Interviewing.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a powerful way of being with a person to help get them unstuck.  MI explores ambivalence—the compelling reasons to both stay the same and change—and focuses on resolving that ambivalence while managing motivation to change.

It is particularly effective for those not wanting to change or not quite ready to change.

MI emphasizes the importance of autonomy and honoring a person’s right to be exactly who they are in this world according to their own values.  Respect and empathy is the foundation for all our work together.

Using CBT & MI, clients typically leave our sessions with energy and enthusiasm to change, while learning actual skills to make that change.  Exciting, super fun work.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy + Motivational Interviewing = Living Life Better.
