Treatment Philosophy, Part I

As a psychologist,

  • I am not an expert in you.  I could pretend to be—but you are that expert.

  • You decide what—if anything—needs changing.  My job is to help in whatever ways are helpful. 

  • I am an expert in clinical psychology. 

  • I specialize in helping people grow through difficult times (with laughter). 

  • For various issues (anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, relationships, workplace burnout, etc.)I use treatments that work, delivered in ways you can understand, with words I can nearly guarantee you’ll remember. 

  • If you are interested, I can also help you move beyond your distress, develop greater resiliency, and Live Life Better.  

Thoughts on disorders & emotions

  • Labels are generally disabling—especially psychiatric labels—and often inaccurate, limiting, distancing, not helpful, and at times, harmful. 

  • Emotions are often flags to get your attention to take care of basic needs, survive, heal, and/or make important changes.  Understanding the function of emotions and being able to experience them accurately is powerful.

Your brain isn’t messing with you just to mess with you.  It’s trying to be helpful. 

My approach will teach you to work with nature—instead of against it—and challenge you to reach for who you want to become.  If I do my job well, the only side effect from our work together will be Living Life Better

In addition to fun, effective, solution-focused psychotherapy, I believe in an integrative model for health and wellness, and work collaboratively with specialists in nutrition, massage, mindfulness, yoga, and acupuncture.  I am also happy to coordinate care with your primary care physician and/or prescriber of psychiatric medications.

I am a clinician educator with nearly two decades of experience helping people effectively and powerfully create and sustain behavioral change.  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) together—when done well—is the most empirically supported treatment for nearly all “disorders.” 

That means this stuff works.  My approach is proven, personalized, unique, strategic, and offers space to create lasting change.

I am accepting new people—though I expect my practice will quickly become quite full.  However, if you are struggling and need immediate care, I will do my best to see you within 24 business hours. 

And thanks to COVID-19 and Daughter-9, I now offer Telehealth appointments. Telehealth is surprisingly effective, easy-to-use, safe, secure, and convenient. I simply send you a link to a video-conference call and we meet on your phone, iPad, or computer. If you’d like to meet in person, I am scheduling appointments every-other hour and taking extra health and sanitary precautions to ensure your continued health in my office.
